London Charter and Tips from Europeana in Ukrainian – Volyn Foundation’s Contributions to Cultural Heritage Digitisation

Лондонська Хартія та поради від Європеани українською – внесок Волинської фундації у цифровізацію культурної спадщини

The Volyn Foundation, inspired by its involvement in the “Digital Transformation for Cultural Heritage Capacity Building in Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine” (DGTRAN) project (supported by the Creative Europe Programme), has made some useful contributions to the field of cultural heritage digitization in Ukraine. The Foundation has translated two essential documents that were previously unavailable in Ukrainian, providing invaluable resources for cultural heritage professionals and institutions.

The first translated document, “The London Charter for the Computer-Based Visualisation of Cultural Heritage,” is a critical guideline that establishes standards for the digital visualization of cultural heritage. This charter ensures that digital reconstructions of heritage sites and objects are accurate, reliable, and verifiable. By making this document accessible in Ukrainian, the Volyn Foundation enables local professionals to adhere to internationally recognized standards, thereby ensuring high-quality digital preservation and presentation of Ukraine’s cultural treasures.

The second document, “Basic Principles and Tips for 3D Digitisation of Tangible Cultural Heritage,” produced by the Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana, offers comprehensive guidelines and practical advice for 3D digitization projects. This resource is crucial for Ukrainian cultural heritage professionals, providing detailed instructions and expert recommendations on the 3D digitization process, from initial planning to final implementation. The availability of this document in Ukrainian ensures that digitized objects meet high standards of accuracy and detail.

The DGTRAN project has been a source of inspiration for the Volyn Foundation, emphasizing the importance of integrating Ukrainian cultural heritage into the broader European context. The project has demonstrated the value of collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and best practices. Through this involvement, the Volyn Foundation has recognized the necessity of making critical resources available in Ukrainian to support local professionals in their digitization efforts.

We hope that access to these translations will bolster the capacity of Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions to adopt and implement European standards; facilitate collaboration on joint projects, provide access to funding opportunities, and the sharing of innovative solutions. This enhanced cooperation not only strengthens Ukraine’s cultural ties with the EU but also fosters mutual understanding and appreciation of shared cultural values.
